We are very pleased to announce that the 2012 Email Marketing Scholarship has been awarded to…

Kaylyn Fox of Maryland!

Nearly 400 students submitted essays answering the question,

“If the communication tool you use the most went away forever tomorrow, how would your communication habits change? How would you cope with the loss of that tool? Would you still do the things that you used to rely on that (now gone) tool for?”

Kaylyn’s response was chosen by a panel of judges for its critical thought and clarity of expression.

She also clearly represented the predominant trend we found among responses: the lack of dependence on any single medium of communication. Today’s abundance of options makes this a nonissue. As Kaylyn expressed:

“Without Tumblr, I would still be able to do many of the things for which I originally used it. I could use email and Facebook to keep in touch with my friends. I could find message boards pertaining to my favorite books, movies, and television programs. I could watch funny videos on Youtube, and find other sources of humor using StumbleUpon. I could use online newspapers to keep up with current events. Tumblr simply made these things easily accessible on one single website for me, but I could still manage without it.

While my favorite social network would be lost, my world within it would not. Losing contact with people who are similar to me would not negate their existence; I would simply have to try harder to find them in my own small universe.”

Kaylyn is excited to be attending the University of Alabama, where she will be studying civil engineering and political science. Regarding further use of communication technology, she says, “While there are definitely negative aspects to the increased involvement of technology in our lives and no one really knows the consequences those side effects will bring in the future, technology is still an inherently good thing in the development of our world and there’s no turning back from it now.”

We wish Kaylyn the best of luck in her studies and beyond!
