Be Heard! is the free weekly online newsletter for entrepreneurs, solo professionals, consultants, coaches and small business owners that will help you learn the secrets to attract more targeted clients and customers through publicity and promotions.
I had a great time in New York City. But as you can guess the best part was meeting Amy Bates Stumpf from The Gift List. Her holiday publicity trade show was simply stunning. With more than 100 entrepreneurs and businesses showing off their products an services to major media journalists, there was a real buzz going on.
I picked up some amazing tips from those who were there, including what's new with media kits, what reporters are looking for this year - and much more! I even got a preview of some of the hot new products we'll be seeing later this year. (I made sure Matt made note of what should be in my Christmas stocking!)
After my own 'Shannon & the City' escapades, I settled back into Albany the following day to teach my first of two sessions of the Happy Holidays: Your Guide to Free Year-End Publicity, where I was already sharing what I learned the day before. (You can still hop on to tomorrow's final class, and get the audio of week one's lesson by registering athttp://www.beheardsolutions.com/holidaypr.htm)
Then it was off to graduation and pool parties with the family on the weekend. We also celebrated Father's Day with Matt (who decided the best gift of all was to sleep in!) and my 86-year old grandfather, Papa. (Seriously, that's the name that he goes by, even his priest and the nuns call him this!) And his name was one of the first words Lyra said that meant something! Papa has got the best radio voice going. And he's used it throughout the decades - covering Baseball Hall of Fame games and boxing tournaments over the years. (His story about dinner with a 16-year old Mike Tyson is a killer!) The one thing he taught me early on was how powerful the media is at helping to get your message to the right people. Find out more when you read this week's feature article.
And before I forget: I've also been planning something really exciting and fun for you for the summer months. I'm not yet ready to reveal it all, but I could still use your help. Would you mind filling out a quick, six-questions survey so I can make sure my new project delivers exactly what you want and need?

The Gift List
Stop struggling to get a media list together to pitch your holiday stories and products!
The temperature may be rising, but it's time to start thinking Holiday. Subscribe now to The Gift List for Holiday 2008 and get your hits going for December now!
This is an essential resource that lists thousands of top media outlets, complete with contacts details and exactly what they're looking to feature this holiday season. (And it's so much cheaper than most good media databases out there!)
If you want to save time (and money) - and the aggravation of doing it all yourself - you need The Gift List.
What I love about The Gift List is that they've put in hundreds of hours of contacting editors and producers that work for magazines, newspapers, radio, wire, syndicates and national TV.
That means you can work more on pitching and spend less time on researching who to pitch to.
Plus, you'll have media contacts you can use year-round to get free publicity.
Why Getting Media Coverage is Important for Everyone
Why should your small or home-based business worry about getting media
coverage? Is it really worth all the time and hassle?
According to most
entrepreneurs and small business owners who have done it, the answer is a
resounding yes! Even the Wall Street Journal recently described how important PR
is to the small business owner.
As described in the story, many companies
turn to PR after they have unsuccessfully spent money on advertising campaigns
that produced little or no results.
Why PR? According to the Journal,
"People are skeptical of advertising," says Lena Fiore, head of a company that
doesn't use advertising. By itself, she says, one successful media placement
brought half a million sales. "I don't know what it is about newspapers," says
Ms. Fiore. "When people read about something, maybe it's more real to them. They
seem to believe it whether it's true or not."
In addition, more and more
companies are able to tie sales directly to media mentions. For example, one
company featured placed a "how did you hear about us?" box on their website
ordering page and was able to draw a straight line from PR results to their
sales figures. A mention in a newspaper, news show or web page can bring in huge
results for a company.
Here are some ways publicity can benefit you and
your company:
The most cost-effective promotions for your
business. It may cost a bit of time for the preparation of press
materials and for getting to know the appropriate contact persons. But once you
get the coverage, you'll easily see it didn't cost you anywhere near the big
bucks that the same number of column inches in the newspaper or the same amount
of airtime on the TV news would have cost if you'd paid for it as
advertising!
You get more audience attention with editorial
coverage. Paid ads can be glossed over, skipped or even totally
ignored. But if your business is the focus of an article, or gets mentioned
favorably in a feature TV segment, you are able to capture the attention of the
readers and engage them in your news story.
It is more
credible. It is a fact: news is more believable than advertising. While
belief in advertising is understandably tainted and biased, people have more faith in what they read in newspapers or magazines
and in what they hear from radio or TV commentators. For the audience, a third-party comment implies
objectivity.
It not only builds your visibility and reputation,
but also boosts your bottom-line. Media coverage can be effectively
used as a sales tool for potential customers. Remember how you found your new
favorite restaurant? From a restaurant review? Positive media coverage
translates into more customers and increased sales.
It is
DIY-able. Entrepreneurs can be their own publicist for their own
business. With Be Heard Solutions, you can learn everything there
is to know about the various forms of media and how to get your business noticed
by them. This is ideal for startup business with tight
budget.
