Why a reporter isn't your friend

When we want some news coverage, who do we go to?

A reporter, right? Sure, that's the correct answer, but you need to be careful dealing with reporters.

One of the biggest mistakes we make is to view reporters as our friends. We think we know them. After all, we see and hear reporters every day; they become part of our lives. But this fictional view of reporters can lead to trouble when you deal with them on a personal or business level.

The first biggest myth about dealing with reporters is the notion of on-the-record, off-the-record. A reporter may say information will be off-the-record, so they may not use you as a source, but it is their job to break stories before the competition. So they will find other sources and still release a story which could be bad for you personally or economically. The best way to keep from releasing information you don't want to is to be properly prepared for your interview.

The best mind set to have before talking with a reporter is to think of them as any other business tool that you may use on a daily basis. Your business utilizes many outside vendors, ones that you wouldn't talk about your inner workings to, so treat reporters the same, give them the information that you want released. If your business utilizes reporters frequently then you may begin to view them as a friend this is only natural, however keep a certain amount of distance from them.

Another common misconception about reporters is that you should maybe give them a gift or some other token of appreciation. Reporters are doing their job by releasing the news, they are paid for their work and giving gifts could be easily misconstrued.

Don't try and make your interview an advertisement, reporters want to break stories not publish advertisements for your business. Stick to what you're trying to say, don't think because you're being interviewed that everything you say is newsworthy, this ties in with being prepared think about what information you want to pass along, and practice it.

These ideas will make your interview go smoother and will help it look more professional. By looking professional in an interview will give your business more credibility and also help with publicity which is the main goal of any interview.
