Cross-border Self-Sovereign ID is Coming

Cross-border Self-Sovereign ID is Coming but by another name; Digital ID. A rose by any other name is still a rose.

Cross-border digital ID is coming: Mastercard plans to supply infrastructure

Australia and Singapore in talks

National identity representatives from the APAC region discussed their preparations for borderless digital identity and interoperability at the Singapore Fintech Festival 2021. National systems are still establishing themselves and working with their private sectors on use cases and integration, but countries such as Australia and New Zealand are already discussing how to make their digital ID work in each other’s country while Mastercard is planning to handle cross-border digital ID as soon as 2022.

Self-Sovereign ID is similar yet independent of “Big Brother” Government, however the concept is a threat. Governments are keen to control the market of Digital ID and downplay the benefits of Self-Sovereignty.

Digital ID is “one of the biggest opportunities of our generation.”

The race is on to provide the service and 2022 is the target year for mass adoption. MasterCard already have broad scale infrastructure in place and a huge head-start.

Mastercard has been rapidly developing its identity division, piggybacking off its global network and KYC capabilities. It is working on digital identity schemes across the world, such as biometric projects to aid financial inclusion in sub-Saharan Africa to digital ID to help Brazilian students securely take remote exams.

Digital ID Services Market – Top Key Players

Identity is a global issue that can’t be solved by any single entity or government or private sector, a borderless, digital world requires a re-usable identity service that can be trusted and accepted everywhere the user transacts. Subsequently the Digital ID Services Market is a rapid growth industry.

Top players in the Digital ID Services Market are: UniquID, BeehiveID, Authentiq ID, Global Data Consortium, JumioEDIT, Civic, Socure, Sedicii, BanQu, Icar Vision, Uport, HYPR, Evernym and Logrr.

National Digital ID

National Digital ID is not Self-Sovereign ID

National Digital ID is not Self-Sovereign ID, yes it’s a good place to start. You need to have Government issued identification, or a birth certificate in order to create Self-Sovereign ID. The passport will always remain a key document for proving your identity but if your only Digital ID is from your government, you have lost your Self-Sovereignty.

Self-Sovereignty is only provided by your application, using your Government issued certificates, such as a Social Security number. The big difference is that with a Self-Sovereign ID you control your digital domain.

With Self-Sovereign ID you reign over your Digital Domain

The importance of reigning over your own domain is that we can no longer trust corporations, or governments to respect our privacy. By 2022 Apple will launch it’s Digital ID platform and most Nation States will require Digital ID for travel. Within four years all the Internet browsers will add the security layer that requires Digital ID to log-on.

In many ways the security layer is long overdue, as online fraud became rampant. Everyone in the world will benefit by the accountability of Digital ID, as long as the systems themselves are kept accountable. Third party authentication and systems of verification, known as a Trust Anchor help reduce fraud on the Internet.

Governments are keen to control over their citizens, as a result they have become a risk for monopoly. Naturally every Nation would require it’s own identification systems and all have passports. The point though, is that only you can create your own Self-Sovereign ID and National Digital ID is not in your control. Governments tend to omit the facts about Digital ID.

Self-Sovereign ID is far superior than National Digital ID, you control one and the other controls you.

Bitcoin’s reputation as the soundest form of money is largely underpinned by its decentralized blockchain network. The network comprises globally distributed computers, known as a “node,” that connects to each other and are run by anyone in the world with access to a modern-day computer and an internet connection.

While roughly 31% of the world is unbanked, Bitcoin is an opportunity for virtually anybody worldwide to become their own bank.¹ Running a full node is the only way to use Bitcoin without reliance on a third party. Full node operators foster Bitcoin and support the network to become more decentralized. They ensure that Bitcoin has no single point of authority or failure that dictates the actions of the rest of the network.

Instead, Bitcoin relies on a broad consensus of these full nodes to validate and secure transaction data on the network. Full nodes also allow market participants to transparently view data on the network by publicly hosting a copy of the blockchain.

The primary function of Bitcoin nodes is to ensure blockchain data is valid, secure, and accessible to virtually anyone. Though many assume running a node is a purely altruistic endeavour to bolster the Bitcoin network, using a node to verify transactions offers users by far the best privacy and security assurance. In this report, the Kraken Intelligence team analyzes what a Bitcoin full node is, why you should consider running one, and how to set one up and use it to verify your transactions.

Golden Earth

Avast snaps up self-sovereign identity pioneer to bolster digital freedom vision and service delivery

PRAGUE, Dec. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ –Avast (LSE:AVST), a global leader in digital security and privacy, today announced the acquisition of Evernym. The US company was instrumental to the invention of self-sovereign identity, with leading contributions from their Chief Trust Officer, Drummond Reed, and others in the company working within the industry standards community. This work has enabled the development of innovative products and services based on decentralized digital credentials, leading to a more trustworthy online experience.

Evernym’s groundbreaking approach to digital identity provides consumers with autonomy over their online presence by keeping their personal information with them and out of centralized databases. Awarded ‘Technology Pioneer 2021’ by the World Economic Forum, Evernym is already embedded in industries such as travel and finance where Evernym’s technology is at the heart of the IATA (International Air Transport Association) Travel Pass, and also powers Bonifi’s ‘MemberPass’ solution for community financial institutions.

Ondrej Vlcek, CEO Avast, said, “Consumer trust in the online world has been critically compromised. Over 60% of the world’s population has internet access today yet we don’t have adequate provisions in place for these people to prove who they are online. The result is that identity theft, online fraud and account takeovers are growing rapidly, as does mass-scale digital tracking and surveillance. Our vision for digital freedom is to enable people to manage and retain control over their personal data so that they can interact and transact safely, privately and with confidence. Decentralized digital identities are a key component of that vision. Adding Evernym’s groundbreaking self-sovereign identity technology to our offering enables us to address this area and is a huge step forward in the realization of a digital world where decentralized, portable identities are available universally and globally.”

In a self-sovereign or decentralized identity model, the individual retains all of their data and chooses what data they consent to share in any transaction and who they share it with, removing the need for passwords, individual accounts, and other traditional tools which are vulnerable to being hacked, phished, and intercepted. This protects their data from being monetized by third parties, compromised in a breach, or abused for analytics. Giving the user control over their personal data is a critical part of rebuilding trust in digital services, and will enable growth in areas as diverse as online commerce, gig economy, travel, healthcare, and banking and finance, among other applications.

Charles Walton, SVP and General Manager Identity, Avast, said, “Our identity vision is for a truly inclusive, global digital society. Our services will bridge from the existing digital world, where identities and data are stored in a centralized or federated model, to the new digital world where people are in control of their data and set the rules of engagement for online providers. We think of this as decentralizing identity, meaning individuals retain their personal information while being able to digitally interact with each other in a trustworthy manner. This reusable digital identity approach removes the friction and frustration of online transactions, guarantees safety and privacy for users, and empowers people to engage more deeply in today’s rapidly developing digital economy. Evernym is a recognized leader and innovator in this area and will complement our more than thirty years’ experience in security and privacy as we focus on delivering our breakthrough identity products.”

Steve Havas, CEO Evernym, said, “Since its founding, Evernym has been a major catalyst in the global movement towards decentralized identity. We have led the development of new identity standards, built the world’s first decentralized identity network, and launched a globally leading platform for enabling individuals to securely share their personal information. Combining our decentralized identity leadership with Avast’s globally trusted reputation for protecting individuals is a perfect combination to help bring back privacy and trust in everyone’s digital interactions everywhere, every time.”

The acquisition is expected to close in mid-December and the general availability of the products based on the Evernym technology will follow in 2022.

Cheqd Expands Partnership Network with Leading Self-Sovereign Identity Vendors

LONDON, UK, May 4, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — cheqd, a market-leading solution enabling individuals and organisations to take control of their data has expanded its partnership network to a total of 35 top self-sovereign identity (SSI) vendors, after announcing its second SSI cohort.

SSI or decentralised identity is an emerging disruptive technology for exchanging trusted (also referred to as authentic) data, between people and companies in a more secure manner, giving entities ownership and control over their own data. According to a meta-analysis by cheqd published on Bloomberg, the SSI market is projected to be worth over US$550 billion, which demonstrates the significant opportunity the technology poses.

cheqd’s network is primarily built for SSI vendors to disrupt established identity paradigms and create new authentic data marketplaces. Each SSI vendor will utilise cheqd’s network tooling, functionality and native token, $CHEQ, for payment rails, never-seen-before commercial models and decentralised governance to advance their commercial strategies and technical roadmaps. The scale of distribution in the SSI space is unmatched – through its strong community of partners, cheqd engages with companies in various different industries, which further demonstrates the endless areas of opportunity for the application of SSI technology.

The new SSI companies joining cheqd’s network are as follows:

Animo Solutions: https://animo.id/

Animo Solutions works with developers and organisations to improve digital interaction using verifiable credentials. They create solutions where exchanging data is privacy-preserving and frictionless. Timo Glastra, co-founder of Animo Solutions, comments on building scalable SSI solutions on cheqd to handle the huge forthcoming growth in SSI:

“At Animo we build open-source digital identity infrastructure. Through our customers, we’ve experienced the need for a scalable network that is specifically suited to SSI implementation. We’re using cheqd to build SSI solutions that can handle the huge growth that is coming in the field.”

ID Lynx: https://idlynx.com/

ID Lynx connects and empowers a global community that provides decentralised digital identity solution platforms for individuals, organisations, animals and IoT devices. Chris Raczkowski, CEO of ID Lynx, comments:

“By joining the cheqd network we’re looking forward to utilising the network’s core utility to support our existing customer use-cases and explore cheqd’s payment rails for SSI to bring entirely new use-cases and revenue streams to our business. We are also excited to join the partnership network and cooperate with diverse partners to fast-track not just our own growth, but also accelerate the global adoption of SSI – a long-held ambition of mine and our ID Lynx team.”

Gravity: https://www.gravity.earth/

Gravity believes in data sharing for anyone, anywhere and has created products where individuals and organisations can create and manage portable and verifiable digital identities, issue and share credentials securely and easily verify and authenticate users. Johannes Ebert, CEO of Gravity, explains why joining cheqd is critical to their business:

“For companies like us, focusing on building applications based on SSI that enable users to access services, the payment rail component is critical in ensuring that we offer customers a seamless payment experience. Gravity’s business model is based on “pay per data”, such that customers pay for the data exchanged based on the number of credentials and the types of claims contained within them. Leveraging cheqd’s payment rail infrastructure is therefore vital for Gravity as our customer base expands and the number of credential exchanges grows.”

AyanWorks: https://www.ayanworks.com/

AyanWorks builds the foundations of SSI for individuals, enterprises, applications, and devices based on open standards. CEO of AyanWorks, Kalyan Kulkarni, comments on how cheqd’s incentivisation of verifiable credentials could lead to widespread adoption:

“AyanWorks is a fast-growing Blockchain Tech consulting company with a focus on decentralised identity and verifiable credentials. We share the vision of ‘identity for all’ by means of bringing solutions that emphasise privacy by design and privacy by default. We are keen to see how incentivising the verifiable credentials that cheqd is evangelising, can contribute to the adoption of this technology and are excited to have joined this network to leverage it and accelerate SSI solutions.”

Gayadeed: https://www.gayadeed.it/it/

Gayadeed is an application that helps companies and professionals to securely sign agreements instantly from anywhere in the world. Co-founder of Gayadeed, Egidio Casati, sees cheqd as a crucial evolution in incentivised networks to bridge traditional eIDAS trust services:

“As a smart agreement platform, we are committed to bridge traditional eIDAS trust services with SSI protocols, focusing on interoperability, sustainability and UIX. We fully embrace cheqd’s crucial evolution towards a sustainable, properly incentivised and interoperable SSI ecosystem and we are glad to join the network to build and deliver SSI-powered applications ready for mass adoption.”

Monokee: https://monokee.com/

Monokee permits organisations to manage identities and embrace the new identity paradigm of SSI, where people and companies take control of their digital identity. Roberto Griggio, CEO of Monokee comments on the cheqd partnership:

“Monokee is a technology enabler that integrates identity management with disruptive and decentralised technologies to provide enterprise-grade security and compliance. Thanks to the partnership with cheqd, Monokee aims at establishing a virtuous cycle where verifiable credentials and distributed ledgers can sustain themselves, through cheqd’s payment rails, network utility and commitment to interoperability and open standards.”

Umazi: https://www.umazi.io/

Umazi are pioneers of global cross-industry due diligence and one of the most exciting start-ups in the space. Co-founder and CEO Cindy van Nierkirk on the collaboration with cheqd to increase revenue on all sides of the trust triangle:

“Umazi is carving out a new market to enable continuous enterprise identity verification for business due diligence. We’re ready to explore the utility of cheqd’s payment rails to incentivise users of our due diligence trust network. This collaborative partnership will allow both of us to grow the next level of revenue generation across all sides of the trust triangle using cheqd’s Web3 SSI technology.”

Soverio: https://soverio.com/

“As thephysical and digital worlds merge, finding secure and trusted ways of verifying the identity or securely exchanging data is becoming essential. Our new partnership with cheqd enables new possibilities for our Soverio customers, not only in a traditional business environment as we know it now but in the near future too (CeDeFi, Web3, Metaverse, CBDC, SSI, etc.). cheqd’s payment rails for SSI are what we missed in our portfolio.”

Verio: https://verio.id/

Verio is a full-stack verifiable credential platform and digital wallet with use-cases ranging from user authentication, customer onboarding to complex multi-party interactions. Cristian Talle, Verio CEO, notes on the cheqd partnership:

EyeLock Enters Face Biometric Identity Market with its NanoFace Product

EyeLock is More Than Iris Biometrics. It is All Contactless Touchless Biometrics

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA, May 5, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — EyeLock, LLC. has just entered the face biometrics market with its newly released NanoFace™ facial recognition solution. If you are considering facial recognition for your facility, you should take a closer look at NanoFace™ from EyeLock.

When absolute identity matters, YOU are your password”

Chris Jahnke

EyeLock has provided world-class iris biometric solutions for over a decade and is globally recognized as the market leader. The worldwide demand for multi-modal biometric solutions is increasing and moving into the facial biometric market was a natural for EyeLock. If facial recognition is a clients preferred biometric modality of choice, the NanoFace™ solution from EyeLock should be considered. With its high accuracy, authentication speeds under one second, and operating distance up to 6 feet, nothing on the market today compares. When your facility requires the highest levels of security that biometric solutions provide, EyeLock has the biometric identity solutions for you. When EyeLock asked its customers what they wanted in a face biometric solution, most stated that speed, accuracy, and affordability were the top three driving factors. Additionally, it had to be easy to use and come in a smaller footprint. NanoFace™ hit the bullseye on all counts!

One of EyeLock’s strengths has been with its OEM partnerships with the most visible global access control brands in the market. NanoFace™ is fully integrated into Lenel, Software House, AMAG, Kantech, Honeywell, Genetec, RS2, Open Options, Avigilon, Pacom, Sicunet and of course NanoAccess™, EyeLock’s own access control system solutions. Now customers with these major brands can benefit from a fully integrated biometric solution leveraging EyeLock’s iris and face products.

EyeLock’s SVP of Global Business Development, Chris Jahnke, stated that “Although the EyeLock brand has become synonymous with iris biometric identity recognition, EyeLock is listening to the industry and is evolving into a US-based provider of the security industries leading biometric modalities, not solely focused on iris or face. Our world-class engineering team, mature distribution channels and market leadership will redefine who we are and take us into the future. EyeLock will continue to be the biometric brand to have, regardless of modality, and NanoFace is one of the first steps in that direction”.

If you are considering a biometric security solution for your facility, and you are leaning towards face as the biometric modality, NanoFace should be at the top of your list. There is no other product on the market today with so many features and at such a price point, from a proven biometric market leader. Americans Prefer Low-Tech Approach To High-Tech Security

Americans Prefer Low-Tech Approach To High-Tech Security

With life moving more and more into the digital domain and hybrid work solutions potentially creating more vulnerabilities concerning sensitive data , adequate  password security is one of the key concerns for the cybersecurity sector. However, as Statista’s Florian Zandt details below, although programs like password managers and built-in password vaults in browsers are geared towards maximizing security by generating and storing complicated passphrases, 41 percent of U.S. Americans still rely on memorizing techniques to store their passwords.

You will find more infographics at Statista

As data from a joint survey of security.org and YouGov shows, an additional 30 percent of respondents claimed to have their passwords written out on paper. While this is technically a safe way to store your passphrases, it’s rarely convenient and can still be a potential attack point when using said notes outside of the confines of your own home. 24 and 23 percent keep their passwords in their browser or a digital note file, respectively, while one fifth of survey participants commit one of the cardinal sins of cybersecurity: Reusing the same few passwords again and again.

For the 20 percent who use password managers, which are programs that can generate passwords, store them in a digital vault locked behind a master password and enable synchronization across devices, LastPass, Keeper and McAfee True Key are the most popular solutions.

Following an initiative by chipmaker Intel in 2013, every first Thursday in May is observed as World Password Day. This international observance is meant to underline the importance of using secure and strong passwords to protect users’ data and privacy. These efforts still seem to fall short, though: According to an analysis of a database containing over 275 million passwords by NordPass, the three most common passwords used in 2021 were 123456, 123456789 and 12345.
