Why Do People Unsubscribe? An Audio Discussion

I’m fond of telling people attending our webinars that “nobody wakes up in the morning and decides, ‘hey, I’d like to sign up and get some more email today,’” my point being that they have to give visitors a compelling reason to subscribe.

Unsubscribing, of course, doesn’t work the same way. Sometimes subscribers have a compelling reason to opt out of your email list, and sometimes it seems you haven’t really done anything to drive them away.

So why do they unsubscribe from your list?

Unsubscribes Are Good For You

I can see your eyes rolling now.

It’s true, though…while you don’t like to see a subscriber leave your list, any information you can get about why he or she unsubscribed is well worth the subscriber lost.

Remember, connected to that email address is a person who was once interested in your business, but has since lost interest, become offended, or found something else s/he feels is better than what you’re offering.

The more you can learn about what people are thinking when they opt out, the more you can improve future email marketing campaigns.

Verified Opt-in Reduces Unsubscribes & Complaints.

Results of a study conducted by AWeber identified that a verified opt-in AOL subscriber is significantly less likely to unsubscribe in the first 60 days of publication than a single opt-in subscriber.

Statistics were run on a random sampling of approximately 200 AWeber client opt-in email lists of AOL subscribers added in the past 60 days having received a similar volume of emails over that 60 day period. Each subscriber visited a client website and typed in their name and email address requesting to be added to their sales follow up process or newsletter. Since we also record and receive statistics from AOL’s “this is spam” button we included the percentage of those subscribers who also complained the messages they opted into were spam.
