Have a Look at the New Web Form Generator
Posted by Jason Moore
It’s here.
We’ve been talking about it a lot on the blog lately, and you’ve been asking “Where is it? When’s it coming out?” since the first post.
Starting today, the new Web Form Generator is rolling out to AWeber customers. Some of you will get it today, some will get it over the coming days/weeks.
Either way, you probably want to get a look at how it works…
Come Take a Look
I thought it would be nice to give a little tour and show you the Web Form Generator in action (think of it as an open house, only with less house and more web forms
).
Building web forms with the old generator got the job done, but now you can create great looking forms and do it in a way that is much more convenient (look Ma, no HTML editing!).
Enough beating around the bush… let’s see the darn thing already!
Webinar: More On the New Web Form Generator
This free one-hour session will cover what’s new and give you an opportunity to ask questions in a live Q & A session.
Register now (even if you can’t make it that day, we’ll send you a recording of it!).
Take a firsthand look at our new Web Form Generator!
In this webinar, we’ll show you all the new options you have when creating sign up forms.
We’ll Cover:
- What’s new and what stayed the same
- A detailed walkthrough of building a signup form
Date:
Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
12 – 1 PM ET (Convert Time)
Hope to see you on the webinar!
Have You Made a New Web Form Yet? Show it Off!
Are you one of the first to get the new Web Form Generator? Have you made a form with it yet?
If so, show it off – link it up below!
(If you don’t have the new Web Form Generator yet, you will soon… be sure to stop back and share your form, too!)

Wow! This is EXACTLY what I wanted!!! I just switched over from another email company and really wanted attractive forms. You guys blow the other company out of the water!
11/18/2009 11:37 am
Thank you!
-
Looks fantastic. Hope there will be a multi language version anytime soon! It’s too bad that some texts within the emails are sent in english only. I wish there was a way to translate it myself. Still a very nice product!
11/18/2009 12:09 pm

I still don’t see it.
11/18/2009 12:09 pm

I have been waiting for this.
Thanks.

Wistfully waiting for the form generator to land in my account. I’m SO excited about this.

This is one heck of an upgrade. I absolutely love the new features. There’s about 12 forms I use that I desperately want to re-design now. Starting with my customer thank you pages.
The value that has just been added already saved me $47+ on various pop-up and web form generators.
11/18/2009 1:08 pm
-
This is a really cool feature to have !
I actually unsubscribed from Aweber a few months back and went with another service but stayed on your email list.
It looks like I will be returning to Aweber now !

Question:
I see many options:
* in-line
* pop-up
* pop-over
* lightboxHow about a Footer option? Similar to what Google Friend Connect or Ultimate Footer Ad does.
Goes along the bottom of the page vs. the other options. Seems like it would be easy to give another placement option.

Excellent — just what my site needs, thanks
11/18/2009 2:20 pm
-
Looks great, can’t wait to try it.
Form making isn’t something I’m doing every day but if I knew it was there I’d be redesigning forms ASAP. Are you going to email folk when they get the upgrade or will it be a surprise when we discover it?
11/18/2009 2:23 pm
-
Thanks Jason
11/18/2009 3:35 pm
It is true that you guys truly listen to their customers. Thank you for the new awesome form generator
-
How come you are rolling the new auotresponder out to some customers today and rolling it out to the rest of us over the next few days/weeks?
11/18/2009 4:41 pm

When I press the create web form button, something different than what’s on the little video quick-start screen shows up. It doesn’t have a templates tab. I don’t think the new web form generator is in my account.

Kevin,
Staged releases help ease unexpected problems from swamping our team here. Better to only have 20% of 72,000 clients calling about the same issue than to have all 100% of them.
So far everything has been very smooth, so hopefully we’ll be able to get it released to everyone soon.

Great stuff. Very welcomed addition.
Will we have the ability to control the font, size, color so we can match the rest of the page that the form is on?
Looking forward to playing with it.
11/18/2009 9:56 pm
-
Wow! Did you read my mind. This is exactly what I wanted from you.
Sooo easy to do.
11/18/2009 10:41 pm

I must say that this is a great improvement over the other you have provided. It so easy even I can do it now.
Thanks to all who worked so hard to bring it to us.
11/19/2009 12:33 am
-
Wow!
… can I leave it at that, or should I ellaborate??
This is a fantastic upgrade.
My graphic artist won’t be pleased though… all the snazzy optin forms and submit buttons that I used to pay for makes part of his job obsolete.
Congrats on this release!

This is a great addition that you have added. The form I am using now is not working so I am on my way to try a new form using the new generator.

hmmm…. I like the idea, but the amount of white space this adds to forms is way, way too much when trying to maximize real estate on web pages, and whne I try to go into the html version to edit, I get hit with a wall of CSS code that only an engineer could figure out.

Hi, like the new web form builder, but what happened to the options you get set in a hover-over form? (Like once per day, once per visitor etc)?
Can’t find where to edit these settings.

Can I use this form for obtaining events for my community calendar? Or is it strictly for use for building an email list…
11/20/2009 10:57 am

Karin,
Once you set your form type to lightbox or hover via the "form type" dropdown, click the "advanced" link to the right. You’ll get a few more options, one of which is the recurrence.
Janet,
Our forms are designed to collect email subscribers. We would attempt to add anyone who fills out the form to your email list.

Got my first new form up and it looks great. Thanks

Activate me… me.. me…

wow! I love it! already putting it to use.
I do have one question…is it possible to have people fill a form out more than once.
Once I have people on my list I would like them to be able to submit multiple entries under the same email.

Many thanks Justin and especially Tom for the screenshot, had overlooked the advance “button” on the form.

I didn’t even hear the news about this, just logged on and created the form. It was very intuitive compared to the earlier version; and much more colorful and friendly.

Just used the new form builder. 2 things…
1. I needed to have a field where visitors could click numerous checkboxes – can’t do this without entering each checkbox individually (and then can’t have a label for that part of the form – would need to edit manually), which brings me onto…
2. The HTML option for embedding produces a huge amount of code – HTML and CSS – with no line breaks! I need to edit the HTML but have to spend a lot of time breaking it down with line breaks so I can make sense of it.
Would be better if the CSS is produced separately for a start, and for both, simply have line breaks as per the original version of the form HTML

Hi guys, nice upgrade BUT – I can’t find any options that allow me to display the name/email box horizontally. This means that the box (even the small one) is too big for my ufa.
Any chance of having access to the old version of forms also?
Thanks
(off to play some more now…)

Great improvement but honestly… handling the error (like email misspelling ) or empty field that are required on the client side without leaving the form (using ajax or other) is really what was missing from the previous form generator.
Am I the only one that cannot stand this ugly page that shows up when someone forget to fill something… with no other option than to use the back button of the browser to go back to the form? So not professional!
I would have fixed that first.

Chris,
Thanks for the feedback on error pages. They’re not part of the form generation, but they are something we’re looking at separately.
Jesse,
The forms should display just fine in WordPress.
I just went to the WP-powered site linked from your name & noted it appears you have created & placed a new form there successfully. If not, or if you have problems, please get in touch with us.

I would like to see some forms with rounded square corners and that are square shaped. We need all the options you can provide.
I would like to be able to write above and below my form.
The submit button should have options to change the text without losing the image look to the button. Mine turned to plain text when I tried to change it.

Fantastic!
Another great tool within the system.
Thanks

Awesome, I was wondering about the light box form seemingly not having a frequency setting – missed the "advanced" link for that.
Are there any plans to allow us to put pictures into the form? Ie. a pic of an ebook people would get when subscribing etc.
Very nice over all, also I got a head ache just looking at the html version of the form, but I guess it’s flexible enough that I shouldn’t really need to tweak html anyway.

Just got the AWEBER new form announcement literally 5 min ago. I HAD to tell Kelly (at AWEBER) on how EASY it was to change over. I think to change my old form into the new form was literally 2 or 3 clicks and that was it! Took a total of 3 seconds. SOOOOO cool!
11/23/2009 6:18 pm
I can’t wait for my other sites to be transferred so I can throw those forms in there too! Go AWEBER! And Happy Thanksgiving to all
-
wow you guys did a dandy job on this new form generator, I really dig the hover forms!
This is just proof positive that aweber is a must have tool in any internet marketer’s arsenal…
awesome!
thanks!

Great Job

Bingo!
A brilliant option for web site owners serious about list building.
A simplified form code creator without making the result simplistic.
Thanks Aweber.

Great stuff Aweber… was asking for this for a long time…

Great job.

Thanks for this. The old web form generator wasn’t user friendly…

Hi Aweber, new form is great for some people who want to see a bit more colorful forms; THE BIGGEST MISTAKE is it has three times more code and more links – this affecting SEO and Google crawling easiness. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE give us back the option to design and use the simplest and minimal code form!!! Please keep new templates for those who want more colors, PLEASE GIVE SIMPLE FORM BACK!!!
11/24/2009 7:55 am
-
Guys, you outdid yourself on this one. I just put up a form on one of my pages and will definitely be using the new web form generator on all of my sites. I love the themes. Great job!
11/24/2009 11:53 am
-
I’m glad lots of people like the new forms but I can’t believe the HTML that is created – I much prefer the previous version – it was much easier to tweak. Please give option of using old style, or improve the HTML output for those of us who need a very specific look.
11/24/2009 5:19 pm
-
Dang!
Now you’ve gone and done it!
Outstanding form builder.
Thanks bunches.
11/24/2009 7:18 pm
-
You forgot one big item!
You forgot to address a very important aspect, that is, how to NOT DISTURB a customized opt-in form, that we do not want to disturb.
We only want to place minimal HTML in our source pg to direct new opt-ins to our [new] list in aweber.
We do NOT want to create a totally new design.
I am having trouble with this problem now.
I asked questions in your chat box and received an inefficient reply.
I’ve sent emails to your support and waiting for a reply now.
But, all in all, the new form box creator is a welcome addition, good job.
11/25/2009 1:07 pm
-
Finally got time to check out the email about the new web form and am happy with what I have seen so far.
We will see how easy it is to build and install, that is the deciding factor other than how it helps to build our lists.
Thanks for the upgrade. It was a nice surprise.

I’ve created a popover Webform with the new generator but when I open the site with IE6 or IE7 I get an error and the page doesn’t load… Maybe there are problems with browser compatibility?
11/26/2009 1:16 pm
-
So how do you turn the damn thing off? I know how to build forms, but it just became a 10 min job instead of 10 seconds
Seriously can I have the old one back please?
11/26/2009 3:16 pm
-
Dooooood! This new webform generator is EXACTLY why I switched BACK to aWeber from one of your competitors!
Can’t wait to start using it! Another great job, guys! Thanks!

Over 200 lines of style information for the very simplest of web forms? Is that reallly necessary?
Some of your customers are NOT complete technophobes who cringe at the sight of HTML, but the code generated by this monster is nonsensical.
Have you ever heard of code optimization?
It may be a good option for those who don’t want to see the man behind the curtain, but they may wonder why the bandwidth usage on their hosting account just doubled and their pages take longer to load.
Can’t I just generate the old style code and tweak it myself, please? I know I could get the same results with 10% of the code your generator excretes.
If you can’t put an option to use the old version code generator, at least put in the option to customize hidden fields and use the same css as the rest of my page so I don’t end up with different styles all over the place.
I don’t have the patience to sort through pages of gobbledygook code generated by your moronic bot to try to edit the code manually. It used to be so much simpler.

You guy had done a Great Job, I’m sure a lot of subscribers will like this. It’s really professional, can’t wait to create my new squeeze page.
Thanks!

This is great. One more reason to use Aweber over any other autoresponder service.
11/29/2009 10:04 pm
-
The new webform does not support Chinese characters!
Old webform let us have an option to switch between Html and Design tab, so if there is any messy display, I can switch to html tab and correct it there, then I can use the javascript version.
But now the new webform has eliminated it. Any messy display cannot be corrected under html tab, all the js version will show messy display! Can it be put back? I mean the HTML tab.
In my opinion, AWeber should give users option to use whether the old webform or new webform, and not the "force everyone to use new one" attitude, because the old one has its unique advantage

Absolutely awesome Aweber upgrade!
That’s why I’ve stuck with Aweber for so many years… you guys are always improving and making things better for email marketers!

I liked the look of this but needed to add some text in the content box but had to do it manually and its messy to do. Is there anyway you can add a text box to the form in the content area either before the variable fields and after? This would provide some flexibility for form designers. I had to revert to using my old form as adding in manually proved too problematic.
12/2/2009 10:32 pm
-
I like it- lots more options than the old one. I do agree with some of the others that the option to edit html manually should be available to those of us who like to tweak a bit.
I also like the new audio thank you- I will be integrating both into our new design elements
Keep up the good work!
12/9/2009 11:16 pm
-
I look forward to trying it out as we proceed with our new design- like the audio thank you page idea too!
We’ll be trying both…

Hi
I have a few suggestions
1. Add more templates to reflect the number next to each category.
2. Enable us to change the arrow color and adjust the opt-in window vertically too.
I hope this helps other users

Hi there
I, too, like the new optin form templates a LOT.
VERY nice work! =) And a great value-added feature.
Thank you.
—————————————
The code generated by the new forms is, however, throwing up W3 validation code errors such as this:
[start of error returned from http://validator.w3.org ]
# Line 115, Column 33: character “&” is the first character of a delimiter but occurred as data
if (document.compatMode && document.compatMode == ‘BackCompat’) {
This message may appear in several cases:
* You tried to include the “<” character in your page: you should escape it as “<”
* You used an unescaped ampersand “&”: this may be valid in some contexts, but it is recommended to use “&”, which is always safe.
* Another possibility is that you forgot to close quotes in a previous tag.# Error Line 115, Column 33: XML Parsing Error: xmlParseEntityRef: no name
if (document.compatMode && document.compatMode == ‘BackCompat’) {
[/end of error notes]
The problem seems to be occurring because of the “&&” part of the script code.
Any way of getting around this? I’d really like the homepages for my sites (which almost all include an Aweber optin form!) to actually be valid code. All my other code is fine. It’s just THIS that prevents my pages from being valid.
If you could look into it, that’d be greatly appreciated.
