New Interface & Other Enhancements
Posted by Tom Kulzer (AWeber CEO)Our development team has been hard at work for the past 4+ months with some dramatic enhancements to the customer area of AWeber. We’ve all pulled some long days and nights in preparation and this morning our team has released them to the wild.
A few enhancements include:
- Completely new design: Theme colors that don’t get in the way of getting work done.
- Button colors: Green is good, red makes you pause before doing something potentially bad.
- Menu navigation: Get to any page in your account with a single click.
- Reports & Statistics: Hover over any graph to see specific subscriber numbers and rotate pie charts to get a better view.
- Drag and drop to reorder follow up messages.
- One click to turn click tracking on/off without reloading the entire page.
- Currently active list and change list option is more visible.
- Search leads displays faster and paging thru hundreds of subscribers is faster.
- Web form creation wizard steps you thru creating a new form for your website.
- Bookmark any page and when you login later you’ll go directly to that page.
We’ve put together a PDF overview of the interface enhancements for AWeber with screenshots for your review.
It has been tested profusely, but if you should happen to run into any problems please touch base with our support team directly so we can address those issues quickly.
Would love to hear in the comments below what everyone likes about the new interface and what we might be able to improve upon for our next set of updates. Our team has worked really hard on this redesign and incorporated dozens of the suggestions that our support team receives on a daily basis. Your continual feedback is a big part of what helps make AWeber an efficient tool for your opt-in email marketing needs.

Hi all.
Thanks for the update, the new interface (and reporting) is great!
I did notice that the % stats for my webforms are all 0 though.. I do hope that data hasn’t been lost!
Cheers

The new look is great, taking a little time to figure out where every thing is.
One thing I do not like, the font size seems smaller, everything is harder for me to read. Disappointed with that. Also the font color or shade seems to blend with the back ground making it harder to read. -

Great new interface and things feel snappier - faster and you get to where you want to go quicker too. Just one thing though - someone else mentioned web form stats have zeroed. I’m sure that’s just a little glitch though.

Paul/Will,
We see where the web form % calculation is showing 0 even for forms with activity. It’s just a display issue and should be resolved shortly. Note that the collection of data for displays and subscribers is still functioning properly. It’s just the display of the % calculation that’s a bit wacky.

Love it! Great design, easier to use. More professional.
Suggestions for future features:
Add a way to know who is clicking what. For instance. If i send two articles and one of them talks about soap. I would like a list that tells me the readers who clicked on that article so i could save that list and send them a promo regarding soap products.
Thanks Aweber. Great job! Love it!

This enhancement covers so many and more features and improvements we ever wanted to have done to our aweber account. The decision to go with aWeber as our list management, newsletter and autoresponder system proved to be the right one again… Thanks for the new enhancements. It shows that aWeber as the inventor of web based autoresponder services still is not only market but also technology leader at it´s best…! Great Job!

The new interface is so much better. I definately find your system easier to use than getrespone’s as its much simpler but more powerful and feature rich. Do you plan to add video features in the near future?

I have to admit i’m a little disapointed with the new interface.
I have tried to access various accounts I manage and am having issues with firefox, flock and IE.With firefox and flock I cannot login as apparently I have disabled cookies in the browsers, however that is not the case.
And when I tried to create a broadcast in IE the editor would not let me scroll down to edit the HTML.
But maybe im just doing everything wrong?
Ah well, will keep trying!

I love the new layout as well; it is very easy to find things now and is much quicker to navigate. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this for us!
I do agree that the font size is a bit small; I’m one of those people who spend an excessive amount of time in front of a computer monitor so it gets difficult at times to read smaller fonts.
Another thing that I noticed was that the subject line no longer autocomplets and when I send a test message it no longer saves my name and e-mail address. I just set up 3 messges thinking that after the first time it would save but it hasn’t. I set up 25 messages at a time each week and it would be nice to not have to type my name and e-mail message 25 times when I’m sending the test messages.
Over all everything is just beautiful!

p.s. one thing I really like is the way you can see the line lengths in plain view. If you are including urls and you don’t want them broken, this feature really helps. I don’t mind sacrificing font size for this ability.

Love the new design, the look and feel is great. Adjusting to the mew style now as we speak in fact! One thing though, the new area is all left-aligned in Firefox. Any chance to get it centered again? (feeling lopsided!)

Generally I quite like the improvements. Particularly useful is the ability to navigate anywhere with a single click.
I’ve noticed three things that might need some attention however:
1) When composing HTML messages using images located on our own server, I’m now getting security warnings everytime I view or edit the messages in my aweber account. I assume this is because we’re now using https for account access and the image files are located on a non-secure server. It’s somewhat of a nuisance to have to keep clicking the warnings.
2) I’ll echo the previous comment about having the test email function remember the previous entry. It’s tiresome to have to keep re-entering my name and email address.
3) When inserting the unsubscribe link into an <a> tag in an HTML message, somehow the system inserted the URL of the broadcast edit page into the <a> tag as well. Example:
-::- This is what I pasted into the HTML editing window:
<a href="{!remove_web}">unsubscribe or change your email options</a>-::- This is what appeared in the sent message:
<a href="https://secure.aweber.com/users/broadcasts/edit/http://secure.aweber.com/z/r/?TJxMLOzstMyszBysjMys">unsubscribe or change your email options</a>.I’m not sure at what point this got inserted into the HTML since I wasn’t expecting it and watching for it. I simply noticed it after having sent the messages. I had edited the message a few times, so it could have been inserted at any point during those edits. However, I certainly didn’t put that URL in there myself.
Anyway, overall I give high marks for this and consider it a great improvement.

Overall the new interface is great.
The 3D graphs in the reports are harder to read than before though. 3D graphs might look "cool", but they are harder to read. Specifically it is more difficult to read when trying to compare one day/week/month to another, i.e. comparing one bar to another.
Yes, I saw that I can hover over and get a specific number for a bar, but with the old 2D format, I could compare bars at a glance much faster.
I’d like to see the same graph functionality, just in 2D.
Also, the wispy colors are harder to read. Go for more contrast, even though your new look might be more Windows-Vista like, again it is harder to read.
I do like the new menus.
Thanks.

Hi Guys
I love the changes and new features. Really helpful
i find that uploading pages in the browser seems to take longer. i us MS IE. Maybe I need to change some settings. I don’t know.
I must also agree with Rose "when I send a test message it no longer saves my name and e-mail address".
please can you set that up the way it used to save the last used details. Thanks again for a great new look and feel.

It looks more user friendly and easier to use. I have to improvement suggestions that I have been looking for for a long time and they are not yet covered:
1. To be able to display both the fixed opt in message and the bottom message of each email in a different language.
2. To send a broadcast from a lead search page without having to save a view.
3. To be able to delete saved views.

I noticed in the search leads, we used to be able to download it to excel, where the country information was included (geog_country from the IP address). This is still active in each lead record but not on a mass download anymore!
We call every subscriber and this was a unique feature for us using AWeber.
What was the logic behind removing it? And how do we get it back.
Other than that the new interface is great.

Tom Kulzer (AWeber CEO)
March 8th, 2007 at 6:14 pm
Martin,
It’s still there, the interface is just slightly different. When you display your leads (for example the new leads in the last 24 hours) they’ll be an excel icon that appears directly above the search results. Just click that to export your subscribers from individual lists.
Or use the global export function to export and backup your entire account data.

The new look is very nice, but I’m having trouble the with navigation, espcially on the home page. I hover over "messages" and I can see the second level navigation in the yellow, but as soon as I move my mouse off the word "messages" the 2nd level navigation disappears! So I can’t click on any of the pages … only on the main tabs.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Maybe its just my computer. If so, any ideas on what I need to update to make it work properly?
Thanks

Something I found today - don’t know if anyone else has come across it..
The new feature of showing the ’sub-menus’ below the main tabs is great for finding what you’re looking for. And I seemed to recall that the intention was to be able to click on a sub-item for another tab and go straight to that page (or was I dreaming?) ’cause whenever I move my mouse pointer off the tab the sub-menu changes back to the one for the active tab.
I’m working in IE7.
Have I got hold of the wrong end of the stick?
Still love the new interface though.

Josh/Carol,
The sub-menu flicker is a known issue with IE7 that only seemed to surface after we went live yesterday. Our design team is working on it and should have it fixed shortly.
If you click on the main tabs you’ll still be able to access the sub-menus of each section like you could in the older control panel.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the reply. Its actually the fact that the geog_country(from IP) column has been removed from the report.
Any chance of putting it back

While improving the User Inteface is nice, in the final analysis, it’s unimportant. Substantive improvements to the underlying tool would be far more beneficial.
And I don’t see much.
You might recall a discussion in the blog area several months back where several members enthusiastically suggested allowing customization of the unsubscribe page.
This could reap significant benefits. I would use it to make a final pitch for my product, or maybe to pitch another product.
That apparently didn’t make it into this "new & improved" version.
I, for one, am quite disappointed - especially after touting the changes so loudly.

Great look, I like the way you can navigate to sub-pages within each menu category with just one click now, instead of 2.
One thing I’m missing is the arrow icons beside each message in a sequence, which allowed me to quickly and easily re-arrange the position in a sequence.
Now, I’m unable to find even a workaround where I can change, say, the 7th message in a sequence to position #4… and I was forced to delete one of the messages, and then add it to the end of the sequence, just to get the order right.
It would be great if you could bring back that feature, or give us some other workaround that allows rearranging the order of posts in a sequence.
Thanks

[...] Summary I have not had the chance to personally speak with Tom Kulzer, CEO of AWeber, since we first met on an affiliate marketing forum way back when. In fact, I don’t even think that forum still exist. But since meeting Tom (I am guessing around 6 years ago), I have been using AWeber as part of my email management system. AWeber is truly a great email management company who is still getting better with time. You should check them out if you are in need of an email list management system or if you run a newsletter, follow-up or autoresponder list. [...]

Martin, all of the geographic data that was in the old interface is still in the new interface. I’m not clear what exactly it is that you’re missing. Please contact our support team directly so we can sort out what is not being seen.
Steve, improvements are an ongoing project. We can’t change everything overnight and we’re constantly working to improve the service. I apologize if a requested feature was implemented with this update but can assure you that we have many more in the works over the coming weeks and months.
Dr. Mani, Drag and drop the follow up messages to reorder. We thought the web community at large was ready for those type of interface tweaks but we’re finding many customers haven’t experienced some of that more common web 2.0 phenomenon.
John, please contact our support team directly regarding your broadcast issue. This is a relatively common problem of having a tiny bit of HTML in the HTML area that makes your plain text messages a text/HTML message and sends what appears to be a mostly empty message but is actually just the HTML that was entered. Always make sure you send a test message to yourself prior to sending to your list to avoid display issues like this.

On the export-to-Excel feature which was formerly available on the Search Leads page — Please bring it back! Now I must wait for the list to appear, then export the whole list. It was much quicker and more efficient when we could select the desired format (i.e., CSV with email addresses only) and save it directly, without waiting for the list to appear on the screen.
I use this function OFTEN to check verified and unverified leads, usually a week’s worth at a time, and if there are a lot of leads, it takes so long for the list to appear that I’m asked to log in again and have to start all over. Very frustrating.
Other than this problem, I’m delighted with the new format and ESPECIALLY delighted that the last-used list comes up when I log in!!! Thank you for that.

Dear Tom,
as told already we like the new interface and the enhancements. However, maybe you added a little too much high soffisticated bells and whistles. Especially in regards to overuse of scripting.
Especially the help section with it´s automated answer suggestion features drove me crazy today, stalling 3 times (all the time with deleting my just entered support question completely)… It was a wast of time.
Using Internet Explorer 7 the website very often stalls when your interactive platform tries to interact. This is partially because of IE 7s too stupid “security” features, that partially it seems you can´t even turn off…
Please look what could be “re improved” or better said simplyfied to make the login area of aWeber less vulnerable to stalling stupid IE 7…
All The Best

Very nice look & feel.
However I did notice that in the Customer Account Profile page, my mailing address is shown in red and there’s a message there that says:
♦ The address entered contains invalid characters.
This is for both Street Address 1 and 2.
I’ve never had this problem before in the old interface.
Overall, I like the new interface and it looks cleaner too.

I like the new layout, seems more sleek. One feature that I’d like to see , not sure if its been mentioned…if Aweber could interface with my email client, say Outlook or Gmail, or Thunderbird, that’d would make sending a mailout no more difficult than any other email. maybe it could be set so when you use a specific "from" address in your email client, it notifies Aweber to handle the messaging. just a thought…Good work though!

I’m not sure if it is just me but when I am reading in the help sections I have to scroll across the page to read the end of the sentence and then back again so that I can read the beginning of the next line.
We have only be with Aweber for 3 months and so I was just getting used to things and now I have to relearn where everything is.
Otherwise I like the new new look, it is fresh and soothing to the eyes.
