Targeting Segments of Your List

Posted by Justin Premick

Subscribers are like fingerprints: no two are identical.

Some of them are more similar than others, but they all have different needs and reasons for signing up to your list.

Targeting specific groups of subscribers can lead to increased response from them as you more closely address their interests and needs.

At AWeber customers can segment their lists into views. You can base views on a period of time since subscribers signed up to your list, what country they are from, or any other subscriber information. Utilize views to further target segments of your lists with broadcast messages.

See how to segment your list into views and broadcast to them.

Some Ways to Utilize Segmented Broadcasts:

Collect birthdays or other “special” dates to send offers. When I was a kid, I used to get birthday cards from all sorts of local businesses, from the local ice cream shop to my dentist. The cards came between a week and a month before my birthday, and my parents would stick them under a magnet on the fridge. When the time came, I’d go out and get a sundae (or a filling).

You can do this with email by adding a “birth month” dropdown menu to your opt-in form. When subscribers sign up, they pick a month. At the start of each month, send a birthday coupon or gift to the people whose birthdays fall in that month.

Reward Longtime Subscribers. As subscribers “age” they can become less responsive.

Combat subscriber attrition and continue to nurture your relationship with them by periodically offering longtime subscribers bonuses, coupons or other content that you are not sending to your entire list.

Make them feel special and wanted by conveying to them that this is “just for them.” You can use words like premium, platinum and preferred when referring to their memberships subscriptions.

These certainly aren’t the only ways to segment your list; you can segment based on any subscriber information you collect. You just have to determine how you want to segment your list and what you want to achieve by doing so.

This article was so timely for me to find. I’ve been thinking about doing this, but just haven’t made the time. Thanks for giving me a bit of nudge.
