Top 5 Copyblogger Greatest Hits + Special Webinar on Email

Ever had a favorite band you swore everyone had heard of, but lots of people still didn’t know about them?

That’s kind of how I feel about Copyblogger.

Not to get too fanboy, but it’s been in my Top 5 marketing sites since 2006, when I was writing full-time, and it’s an indispensable resource for content marketers.

No wonder I’m pretty pumped to host a special live webinar with founder/CEO Brian Clark and CMO Sonia Simone: “From New List to Critical Mass: Grow Your Audience With Content Marketing” on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 2:00 p.m. ET.

In this new session, developed especially for AWeber, Brian and Sonia will show you how to grow a healthy list of subscribers that open, click and most importantly, convert.

This will be a popular session, so you’ll want to snag a virtual front-row seat.

Top 5 Hits: Copyblogger on Email

In honor of the occasion, and to fully beat the musical theme into the ground, we thought you’d like a hand-selected Top 5 list of Copyblogger’s greatest hits on email.

It’s not easy to choose five posts from six years of solid content, so this list comes with the standard disclaimers. (And you’re welcome to argue these or suggest others in the comments section.)

One common thread: These five posts tackle issues we hear a lot at AWeber, so they’re really geared toward you, our audience. And while some of the articles focus on the basics, even if you’re an email pro, you’ll find valuable reminders in there. At the very least, you’ll find the kind of crisp writing your emails should emulate.

Without further ado …

1. Email Marketing 101: How to Push Send and Grow Your Business

It covers a nice range, from irresistible subject lines and the best times to send your email, to better results with mobile marketing. If you’re somewhat new to email, this series is the perfect place to gain some quick insights.

2. 50 Can’t-Fail Techniques for Finding Great Blog Topics

I know, this post is about blog topics — or so you’d think. But the tips and inspiring ideas in here will fit your email content just fine. In fact, this list can practically fill your content calendar for months to come. It’s that good. Guaranteed. (I’ll admit that #31 isn’t high on my list.)

You’re not a lazy marketer, are you? You’re probably just overworked and underpaid. Don’t worry. This post will work for you, too. Whether you’re just getting started, or looking to improve your autoresponders, you’ll find valuable insights here.

4. 7 Steps to an Email Opt-in Page That Works

To grow your list, you need opt ins, and to get opt ins, you need pages that work. Pretty basic, right? So is this quick-read post, which addresses seven frequently asked (or overlooked) questions for whipping your opt-in pages into shape. You’re probably doing a few of these steps, but many sites aren’t, so it doesn’t hurt to check and see which ones you may be missing.

5. How to Increase Your Blog Subscription Rate by 254%

To subscribe, or not to subscribe — that’s the question this post explores. Actually, it examines how the word itself can make an impact on your list growth. And if you’ve ever yearned for a 254% gain in readers, you’ll want to read it. This one minor change could pay big dividends.

  1. I like A Simple 4-Step Plan for Building an Email Autoresponder that Works (http://www.copyblogger.com/4-step-email-autoresponder/).

Why? It was my first Copyblogger guest post! (And it was well-received)

  2. I only recently came to love CopyBlogger. The post that really got me to start reading was the “7 Steps to an Email Opt-in Page That Works” post since I am always looking for ways to improve squeeze page conversion. I am not happy until at least 40% of my visitors subscribe, and this post actually helped a bunch.

    Thanks for the share!

  3. Hey Vince – Thanks for the addition. That’s definitely a helpful post for email marketers. I especially like Step 4 — so simple to do, yet it falls through the cracks 9 out of 10 times. Everyone using autoresponders should try it ASAP. Great piece.

  4. Hi Gabe — Better late than never, right? Thanks for the vote and your feedback. I’m a fan of that post too (obviously) because it covers a nice range of areas: not too much, not too little. Taken together, those 7 steps can really make an impact on opt-in pages, as it sounds like they have for yours.

What else are you doing that’s helping your conversion gains?

  5. We’re new to Aweber and list building so it’s a bit challenging for us to build our list. This will help us a lot, now we have tons of ideas to take action with. Thanks Aweber and Coppyblogger! :)

  6. I’ve been practicing a few of the list-building strategies I’ve read as a Copyblogger subscriber as well as from other experts. I use the Aweber service, though am frustrated by it. I’ve “lost” over half of the audience I had when changed to Aweber from OneShoppingCart.com’s e-news service because of Aweber’s double-opt-in process. More than half of the people I transferred did not notice that they had to “confirm” their subscription. I asked several such folks when I saw them at networking events what it was about my newsletters that was no longer of interest to them and they universally said, “Oh, I still want your newsletter. You just stopped sending them.” I hadn’t stopped sending them. I just switched systems and they didn’t realize they had to take a second action after they signed up at my new site. Each time I get e-mail addresses at training events (on response postcards because they don’t have Internet access), I “lose” at least half the people I manually enter because of double-opt-in required. I sure hope you talk a little about how to get through (or past) the double-opt-in in your session. I’m signing up!

  7. Hey Hunter,

I am doing all kinds of split testing. Forms, headlines, arrows (or not), videos, and more. I usually run 3-4 tests at a time with one main variable until 100 visits per page. If they all perform well, I make a drastic change and test that.

It’s a never ending thing for me.

    Thanks again,
    -Gabe

  8. I echo Gabe’s comments on the squeeze page. If I’m anything below 35 to 40% I need to look into things. This post gave me some great ideas. Thanks!

  9. Thanks for the feedback. Glad we could help! Getting started is the toughest part for most email marketers, so keep absorbing those ideas and make testing a regular habit. Hope you’ll join us for the webinar and keep us posted on your progress. Cheers!

  10. Thanks for the feedback, Sylvia. The decrease in list size you mentioned is pretty standard, and while it’s often seen as a drawback, many marketers actually see it as a positive for several reasons: the majority of “lost” names were disengaging, so response rates increase and costs decrease. As marketers, we never want to believe people want to actually “move on” from our email list, but in reality, it happens quite a bit over time as people’s needs, interests and schedules change.

As for taking steps to ensure delivery to engaged subscribers, some ideas to consider would be: send a personal email before adding the name, letting them know the COI is coming and to look for it and act on it; review your “from” name/URL and subject line of your COI message, plus any custom language you’ve inserted to minimize filtering issues and maximize the call to action; and if it still persists, perhaps try a web form with COI turned off and compare the signup and attrition rates, to see if there are other issues at play (content, frequency, etc.). It’s hard to diagnose exactly where the issue lies without testing things with your list, but we hope these ideas will help. You can also try our COI webinar recording here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=km3Kj3ynG_o

We look forward to having you on the Copyblogger webinar! Cheers!

  11. Glad to hear you’re testing regularly, Gabe. That’s a major advantage, since many marketers don’t make it a consistent, full-time habit. Feel free to let our blog team know if you’ve got any killer test results you’d like to share. Cheers!

  12. Thanks, Ryan. Glad to hear you got some ideas for tests, and if you have any test results you want to share with our blog team, let us know. Cheers!

  14. Thanks very much for your feedback and recommendations, Nick! Looks like a great business. I love the destinations on the “Agencia de Viajes” page (especially Aruba) and have wanted to visit Colombia for quite awhile. Laverdieri is definitely on my list if I can get there! Meanwhile, I hope you’ll let us know if there’s anything else we can help with, and if you have any small business marketing success stories you’d like to share on our blog. Salud!

  16. When i first heard of the “copyblogger” site, i thought it was going to be strictly about copywriting. But now that i see how diverse the topics, it’s giving me some initiative to find out more and learn more from it. Thanks for the tips!
