How to Integrate Google Analytics with AWeber
Posted by Marc Kline
Last week I published an article discussing the bounce rate metric in a web analytics application and how it can help a website owner make constructive decisions that improve their website and email marketing campaigns.
Studying the bounce rate requires only that you have some type of web analytics package running on your site. But if we want discuss most other metrics, we need a way to tie email and web analytics a bit closer together, and this was pointed out in the comments of my last post by a few thoughtful readers.
We hear you, and fortunately it’s not such a difficult thing to do, so we put together a short set of instructions on how to tie in an email marketing campaign with Google Analytics.
Why Google Analytics?
Because it’s free and powerful and is used by a lot of small businesses for those reasons. There are other great options out there, however, and although the setup may not be identical, you should be able to integrate using a similar process.
Put the Pieces Together
Email and the web may provide the most powerful marketing one-two punch today. By measuring their performance we can take it to the next level to better communicate with our customers and increase sales.
Take a few moments to get your web and email campaigns integrated today. You’ll be surprised how quickly you begin to see some data. But what do you do with it?
Stay tuned for more information on which reports will show you how well your campaigns are performing, and what to do to improve on your results.

Thanks, for putting together this post and the knowledge base article. You guys are great at listening to what the end users are wanting/needing and that is key to a great business.
Thanks a lot!

Jus t a line to sya I love what you guys are doing and I love my autoresponder. The ‘recent’ page changes add functionality to what was already a good service. Also, keep up the great tips, such as intergrating PayPal shopping carts, etc. Good practical stuff.
However, there is one area where I think your backroom boys could clean up - you need to ally with a shopping cart specialist so that you can offer a truly all-in-one service.
I like PayPal my current merchant, but if there is one thing that would cause me to leave aWeber it is the prospect of fully intergrating a shopping cart/delivery of electronic product with my autoresponder. The sort of thing 1shoppingcart does or 2CO.
All-in-one is the way to go. It doesn’t mean you have to buy such a company, but simply set up some kind of deal whereby clients can seamlessly use the two together.

I installed Google Analytics 3 weeks ago (finally!) and have been riveted by the data… but what to do with it!
Waiting with baited breath for the next blog installment on this great topic!

Sounds like an excellent capability - any indications on how long we’ll have to wait to find out how?

Jeff,
Fortunately, you won’t have to! Check out the knowledge base article we wrote covering the step-by-step instructions:

Thank you so much for these detailed instructions. So easy to follow.I’ve been using Google Analytics for some time but was having difficulty working out where traffic to Business Success was coming from. Another excellent update.

I agree with Greg above. If aWeber integrated with 1shoppingcart.com, it would be a tremendous help to streamline the prospect - customer lists.
Would love to see that feature!

Greg and Riggie,
Thank you for the suggestions, and they are good ones. Historically, we have steered away from the idea of working on services outside of the email marketing realm. This is because:
* We feel that email, with its many technical and non-technical ins and outs requires full attention in order to achieve the goals we’ve set out to achieve
* We’ve seen services that do expand into this realm struggle with the deliverability of their messages
Still, we’re constantly discussing new features that could be useful to our customers, such as the auto saved drafts feature (that’s just the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come soon), and I will make sure your suggestion is noted for consideration when we do.

Aweber is the best in the world for a reason, I’ve met Tom the CEO at the Big Seminar and he’s a really nice guy! : )

We switched from another package to Aweber, for many good reasons.
BUT one feature we miss is their open-stats. We could see unique opens, so we really knew how many people opened an e-mail vs. how many times the message was opened, and we could see who those people were. Is there any way to get this info from Google Analytics, or any plan to provide them?Thank you!

Hi Jan,
Because opens are tabulated through the viewing of an image and not a web page, I’m afraid that it would be impossible to track using Google Analytics.
Currently, AWeber doesn’t offer this particular feature, but I can say sincerely that we do consider customer feedback, and I will note yours.
We have a whole team of developers who are working on some useful features and improvements that will help you to accomplish and measure the best results with your email campaigns.
Thanks for the comment, and keep an eye out for some great stuff.

I agree with Jan Naylor-Smith - it would be great to see better open-stats. I would also love the ability to integrate aWeber with my checkout process - a "check here to sign up for my email list" option already exists in my software program (VPASP), but I have to manually enter all the data into aWeber, and there is no quick or easy way to do this. I would love the ability to program my software to send the appropriate codes to aWeber and automate the procedure….
