Hi
As always I hope you are well. A couple of weeks ago, I attended a traditional Irish music competition (Fleadh - pronounced Flah). It was for our county and my son was competing. First of all, I have to say, I'm not really a huge lover of traditional music (more a Madonna/80's music/Kate Bush gal myself) but I found the experience fascinating from a number of points of view. I sat in on some of the competitions and a few things struck me:
- If I closed my eyes, I could have been in Ireland 100 or 150 years ago. The instruments and music would have sounded the same. This is part of the great stream of Irish traditional music...handed on orally from musician to musician
- When I opened my eyes I saw young people dressed in modern clothes but connecting with that tradition in a strong positive way
- Quality outs. Some of the people competing were, er, not very good. I can still hear some of them in my fillings.. I am not a musician but somehow even I recognised the more skilful players.
- Traditional Irish music gives you an instant tribe. It's fascinating to me how groups of complete strangers can sit together and just all play together totally spontaneously. There's usually a quick discussion about what key to play in, what tunes and how many repeats there will be of each tune and then hey, away they go. I've noticed the same phenomena with geeks, Gaelic speakers and sportsfreaks!
- Although the basic tune is the same, great musicians are immediately recognisable and original as they bring their own personality to the tune in the form of "variations" and "ornamentation" and this in turn inspires and flavours the playing of others.
Questions
- Is there something in your culture that you would like to connect with? Why not check it out today?
- What do you know about that would be a tribe for you? What tribe could you join?
- What is the unique something that you bring to your work/hobby? What variations and ornamentation could you bring to your work?
Recommendation:
Recently I had the great privilege and excitement of having an Vedic astrology reading from Lee Gurreri (a colleague and friend of mine who lives in Washington State). We did it over the phone and I found it really useful and insightful. It helped to highlight areas that are doing well, areas of my life where I am fortunate enough to be doing solidly. It also highlighted trends that I need to be aware of and what I need to watch for. It's recorded so you can download it and listen to it again. Lee has a wonderful wise, insightful presence...
