Hi
I hope you are well...and again I want to express my gratitude to you my readers for your support. I want to write today about living gracefully in uncertain times. As I pondered this, I thought about people who embody this quality for me and what characteristics they have in common...this is what I came up with..
- If they have been hit with challenges, they take time to acknowledge their grief and then move on. They neither pretend that this is wonderful but neither do they wallow in it...they wince at the sourness and then ask how they can make lemonade from this lemon they have been handed!
- They focus on what they are grateful for and express a deeper appreciation for what really counts: connection to the Universe/God/Source, themselves, family, friends and hold on lightly to what passes..
- They tell themselves the truth. They acknowledge the debt/problem, ask for help but also seek to dig into their own resourcefulness. And reality is so much kinder than our minds..
- They know that while times are tough...we are also probably the most educated, resourceful, positive generation ever to have faced a recession.
- I compare my own father leaving his home at 15, unable to speak English and just about able to read and write and travelling to England...that at that time might as well have been on the moon for him. He adjusted with courage and dignity as did many of our parents. Let's not whinge.
- I remember listening to Randy Pausch's last lecture. In that he complained to his mother about being unemployed. She pointed out that at the same age his father was fighting World War II.
- Maybe this is a wake up call that we actually do need less "stuff" and greater access to what Michael Neill calls "our innate well-being"...the calm and peace under the turmoil of our beliefs and fears. Less have, more be.
- Maybe this is the opportunity you have been waiting for? On a talent show here in Ireland, one contestant (who made it to the final) had been made redundant from an IT job and decided to really go for a career in music...and look what happened to him!
Take Action!
- Every day for the next week, write down 10 things you are grateful for (let's raise the bar...make it 10 different things each day)
- If you think that you could lose your job, begin to take steps like the following:
- Begin to ask your network for possible contacts
- Get your CV up to date (check out www.CvCafe.com for help with that!)
- If you see this as a time to make a career change...consider investing in the Now What programme (http://www.annewalshcoach.com/now-what-coaching.html). I've decided to hold my current offer open for the next 3 months (June 2009) so this could be a perfect opportunity to reinvent yourself!
- Look at the financial reality of your situation...consider drawing up some sort of list of expenses for the coming months and identify small areas where you can make cutbacks. (www.master-your-money.net )
- Choose carefully what you listen and watch...is it supportive or not?
Again, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help!
Anne
