"This program has taught me to man up to all my responsibilities. To think about the choices I make. And grow up to be a good husband and father to my kids."

What's New at Central Office

Central Office is currently working on putting the original classic movie lesson plans into a new format, which focuses more on relationships and abstinence. This new format includes a discussion of the Motion Picture Production Code (a set of guidelines implemented from the 1930's to the 1960's which regulated what movie makers could show in their films). This discussion gets teens thinking about how romance and love were depicted in the films produced during this period, known as Hollywood's Golden Age.

A brand new lesson plan titled Sex Differences: What the Research Says, was completed last January and displayed at both the Community-Based Abstinence Education (CBAE) grantee conference and the Abstinence Clearinghouse conference. The lesson plan describes some of the biological differences between men and women and the impact these differences can have on relationships with the opposite sex. For more information on Sex Differences: What the Research Says, visit our website at www.egionline.org.

Westfield High School

The EGI team at Westfield High has been working hard to bring the Heart to Heart Program to their teens.

Mike Greiner, a 21-year veteran in the field of education, introduced a new club to Westfield High! The CIA club (Character, Abstinence and Integrity), ran through the 2007-2008 school year starting in September, and viewed Roman Holiday, Key Largo and No Way Out. The club provided support for teens in their decision to save sex for marriage.

Westfield teacher Carmen Danies has also joined our efforts to implement Project Heart to Heart. Carmen is an ESOL (English as a Second Language) teacher and runs the International Club at the school. This past December, we witnessed Carmen speak with her teens in an after-school program about the decisions, characters and relationships in the 1950 landmark film No Way Out.

No Way Out, directed by Joseph Mankiewicz, was Sidney Poitier's first film. Since the advent of Project Heart to Heart, students in public school and faith-based settings have explored various lessons from this film. In February, Mike Greiner observed Black History month with his students in an after-school program, tying in No Way Out with the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.

St. Anthony's, Fairfax County

St. Anthony's finished a successful parent/teen program where they showed both It's a Wonderful Life and Radio. In September, Miss Virginia 2002 Julie Laipply-Carrier came to St. Anthony's to speak on making healthy choices. Julie is a renowned abstinence speaker and positive role model for teens. Her engaging and fun presentation was reported on the front page of the Arlington Catholic Herald newspaper. Warren County

Project Heart to Heart has now been implemented in its very own home town, Front Royal, Virginia. The program was successful at the VFW Hall, where members of the EGI staff showed the film Roman Holiday. A follow-up to the VFW session was given at the Rivendell Club in Front Royal, where Project Heart to Heart participants analyzed The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Project Heart to Heart also gained popularity at Randolph-Macon Academy last year where the EGI team spoke with students on important issues related to character and abstinence. At this college-prep military academy, team members Sarah, Frannie and Joe served as solid role models as they presented the program once a week in a laid back and fun environment.

ABOUT EGI

The Educational Guidance Institute (EGI) is a non-profit organization established
in 1986 by Onalee McGraw and Margaret Whitehead. The mission of EGI is to
present the principles underlying the "Whole Person" approach to character,
abstinence and marriage education.

In the late 1990's, EGI was funded by a Virginia state grant in abstinence education under Title V of the 1996 Welfare Reform Act. With this grant, EGI began
developing and piloting its Love & Life at the Movies curriculum, which provides students with the opportunity to view, analyze and discuss classic films, as
well as learn vocabulary words and practice essay writing.

In October of 2005, through a nationwide grant competition, the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services awarded a Community-Based Abstinence Education (CBAE) grant to implement Project Heart to Heart in Love, Life and Marriage in
several counties in Virginia.
